RAISING AWARENESS

One of WAPA’s main goals is to make the general public, children and adults, aware of the problem of child soldiers around the world and of the importance of their reintegration. Every year on February 12, on the occasion of the International Day to Combat the Use of Child Soldiers, we highlight this issue by organizing an awareness and information campaign, an event or an action. During the school year we also go to classrooms and meet students from primary, secondary and higher education to make them aware of this problem.

ADVOCACY

In order to prevent and end the recruitment of children in non-state armed groups and armed forces around the world (and ultimately their participation in hostilities), and to ensure the protection of these children in armed conflicts, WAPA advocates their interests with the Belgian, European and international authorities / institutions. It does this by making recommendations, as well as by promoting the ratification and implementation of the Optional Protocol of 2000 (Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict – 25 May 2000). This work is mainly carried out in the context of the WING platform of which WAPA is a member. More info on wingplatform.be.
